How to Set up a Sewing Machine

Nothing is more exciting than getting your new sewing machine home and setting it up.

Yet this can also be the most daunting for first-time users. There are many machines on the market, but the setup is pretty much the same across the board. We would highly recommend taking a look at the manual that comes with your machine first.

How to Set up a Sewing Machine

Where to begin, and what are all these things for.

You will want to identify these items;

  • pedal
  • needle
  • hand wheel and/or in some cases the needle up button
  • thread pin
  • bobbin
  • bobbin pin.

Thread will be need thread to fill your bobbin and to sew with.

Once you have identified all of these we will start by filling the empty bobbin. First, you will want to plug in the machine and plug the pedal into your machine side as well. The pedal helps you control the rate of speed of your needle and the presser foot. The needle and bobbin work in tandem to make stitches in the fabric. A hand wheel is usually on the side of the machine and looks like a round disk, in some cases, there is a center disk that you push to tell the machine that you want to load the bobbin. The

A hand wheel is usually on the side of the machine and looks like a round disk, in some cases, there is a center disk that you push to tell the machine that you want to load the bobbin. The thread pin and the bobbin pin are on the machine to hold the spool of thread or the bobbin for loading.

Threading the bobbin.

You will want to place your thread on the threaded pin, thread the sewing thread through the guides to fill your bobbin. These guides are often printed on the machine.

You will notice a small hole inside of your bobbin, thread the sewing thread through this hole and hold it in place gently. Next place the bobbin on the bobbin pin usually on top of the sewing machine. Push it in the direction to fill the bobbin.

Then push on the pedal to fill the bobbin using the pedal to start and stop. You might want to hold the thread for a while to help it get started. Stop when the bobbin full and cut the thread.

Now you have a full bobbin ready for your machine. Take the bobbin off the pin and push the pin in the standard position. For now, place your bobbin to the side, we will get to that in a moment.

Threading the machine.

We are going to assume your needle is already in the machine when you start. With the thread still on the pin, follow the guides on the machine to thread the needle. Instrukcje obsługi.

When you get to the needle you want to thread it through the hole in the needle. Now your needle is threaded, onto the bobbin.

There are usually two kinds of bobbin placements on machines. The first kind is called a top loading bobbin and the compartment is right under the needle. Think of a top loading washing machine. The other bobbin placement type is in the front of the bottom arm and these make me think of front loading washing machines. We will start with the top loading type.

Top loading bobbin placement

There is often a plastic cover that covers the bobbin compartment, open that to expose the compartment.

Holding your bobbin like a P with the thread forming the spoke of the P, place your bobbin in the compartment.

You will see slots in the compartment. Pull on the thread a little and slide it through these slots. These keep the bobbin thread straight.

Then holding the needle thread and with your other hand moving the hand wheel, bring up the bobbin thread. Push both threads towards the back of the machine under the foot and replace the plastic cover.

Front loading bobbin placement

You will want to open the compartment and remove the holder for the bobbin.

Holding your bobbin like a P with the thread forming the spoke of the P, place your bobbin in the holder. Gently pull the thread through the slot on the side of the holder.

Place the holder back into the compartment letting the door close to cover the compartment.

Then holding the needle thread and with your other hand moving the hand wheel, bring up the bobbin thread. Push both threads towards the back of the machine under the foot.

Now you are ready to start sewing.
